What to Say When a Client Gives Vague Revision Feedback

Vague feedback can feel urgent because the client is unhappy but has not named a specific fix. Notes like "make it pop," "try another direction," "I am not sure yet," or "something feels off" do not give you enough information to complete a useful revision round.

The safer move is to acknowledge the concern, ask for decision-ready details, and pause production changes until the client confirms what should be adjusted. Guessing can waste the included revision round and create a new argument about whether the change counted.

Try: "Hi [Name], thanks for taking a look. I can help with the revision, but I need a little more specific direction before I start so the round is useful. Could you point to the exact section, file, or moment that feels off and tell me what you want changed there? Once I have that, I can confirm what is included in this revision round and send the next update by [date]."

For a firmer version, add: "To keep the project inside the agreed revision process, I will wait for the specific notes before making changes. Broad direction changes or new concepts may need a separate approval step before I begin."

A useful revision note names the location, the problem, and the requested change. For example: "In section two, replace the headline with a more direct benefits headline" is workable. "It needs more energy" is not enough by itself.

You can guide the client with prompts: which option is closest, which example should this match, what should the viewer or customer understand faster, what should be removed, and what would make this ready to approve. Those questions keep the reply collaborative while protecting your time.

If your agreement includes one or two revision rounds, vague feedback should not automatically consume a full round before the client has given usable notes. Say that you are collecting clarification first, then the revision round begins once the client sends specific changes.

If the clarified request becomes a new direction, new deliverable, extra stakeholder preference, or change to an approved concept, separate that from the included revision. The message can stay simple: "That is a new direction rather than an adjustment to the approved version, so I can quote it as a change request before starting."

Many clients give vague feedback because they do not know how to review creative or technical work. Give them a short format to fill in: item, location, requested change, and priority. That turns a tense conversation into project admin.

For example: "Please send notes in this format: 1. Where is the issue? 2. What should change? 3. Is this required for approval or a preference?" That last question helps you separate approval blockers from nice-to-have changes.
