Stop losing money on AWS Solutions Architect projects.
Send your first 3 contracts for free. A single unoptimized NAT Gateway or misconfigured RDS instance can trigger a five-figure AWS bill in days. Without a signed contract, you are the one the client blames for their cloud consumption costs and security vulnerabilities.

Statement of Work
Ref: 2026-001 • Standard Business Template
Infrastructure Standards and Professional Scope
The AWS Solutions Architect agrees to provide services in accordance with the AWS Well-Architected Framework and industry security standards. The scope of work is limited to the specific services and regions outlined in the project proposal; any subsequent modifications to the cloud environment by the Client or third parties after delivery shall void any implementation warranties. All automated scripts, Terraform configurations, or CloudFormation templates developed specifically for the Client shall be considered 'Work for Hire' upon receipt of full payment, though the Architect retains the right to utilize general-purpose code snippets and architectural patterns derived from professional expertise.
Liability Limitation and Security Responsibility
The Architect shall implement security best practices including encryption at rest and in transit, multi-factor authentication, and least-privilege access; however, the Client acknowledges that cloud security is a shared responsibility model. The Architect is not liable for data breaches, unauthorized access, or loss of service resulting from AWS platform outages or Client-managed credential leaks. Furthermore, the Architect shall not be held responsible for unexpected billing spikes resulting from Client-driven scaling events or misconfiguration of resources by the Client's internal team following the final project handover.
Cloud Consumption Liability
Clients may attempt to withhold payment if their monthly AWS bill is higher than expected, even if the costs are due to their own traffic or unoptimized application code.
Security and Compliance Gaps
If a breach occurs due to a client's weak root account password or mismanaged access keys, they may blame your architecture design for the failure.
IAM and Account Ownership
Disputes over who holds the keys to the kingdom can lead to project lockouts or legal threats regarding the control of proprietary data and infrastructure.
What is a AWS Solutions Architect contract?
An AWS Solutions Architect contract template is a specialized agreement that outlines the scope of cloud infrastructure design, security implementation, and IaC deliverables. It protects the freelancer by limiting liability for AWS service costs, defining intellectual property rights for code, and setting clear boundaries for ongoing technical support and system maintenance.
Built from real freelance projects
This template is based on real-world scenarios across freelance projects where unclear scope, missing payment terms, and revision creep led to lost revenue. It is designed to protect your time, define expectations, and ensure you get paid.
Why AWS Solutions Architects need a clear contract
AWS Solutions Architecture involves high-stakes decisions regarding data integrity, security, and operational costs. Unlike general software development, a mistake in architecture can lead to immediate and massive financial loss via egress fees or compromised IAM credentials. A written contract is essential to define the boundary between your design work and the client's operational responsibility. It ensures you are not held liable for third-party service outages or client-side configuration errors that occur after your engagement ends. Without a clear agreement, clients often expect infinite support for their cloud environment or assume you will act as a 24/7 security operations center without a retainer. This document professionalizes the relationship by turning vague requests like 'fix our cloud' into specific, billable deliverables with defined limits of liability.
Real-world scenario
Imagine you agree to migrate a client's monolithic app to a containerized EKS environment. During the process, the client's developers frequently change their CI/CD requirements, adding weeks of unbilled rework to your schedule. Because your contract did not define a specific scope for the 'Migration Phase,' the client assumes these changes are included in the flat fee. Three months in, the client experiences a massive surge in data egress costs because they failed to use VPC Endpoints as you suggested in a verbal meeting. They refuse to pay your final $10,000 milestone, claiming your architecture is 'flawed' and demand you pay for the $5,000 AWS bill overage. Without a written contract that isolates your design responsibility from their usage costs and requires sign-off on architectural decisions, you are forced to choose between a legal battle or losing months of profit to cover their mistakes.
🛡️ What this contract covers:
- ✓AWS Well-Architected Framework review and high-level infrastructure design documentation including VPC CIDR blocks and IAM hierarchies.
- ✓Deployment of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) templates for automated resource provisioning of EC2, RDS, and S3 environments.
- ✓Final production migration, performance tuning, and delivery of a comprehensive administrative handoff manual with security credentials.
Best practices for AWS Solutions Architects
Establish Approval Gates
Require formal written sign-off on the High-Level Design before any resources are provisioned in the AWS Console.
Define Support Boundaries
Clearly state that post-deployment support is limited to a 14-day warranty for deployment scripts, after which a separate Managed Services retainer is required.
Enforce Version Control Access
Maintain your IaC in a private repository and only transfer ownership to the client's GitHub or GitLab organization once the final invoice is settled.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is responsible for AWS service charges incurred during the project?
The Client is solely responsible for all monthly AWS billing and consumption costs; the Architect provides architectural guidance but does not act as a financial intermediary for hosting fees.
Does the Architect provide 24/7 incident response post-handover?
No, this contract covers the design and implementation phases; ongoing maintenance, monitoring, and emergency support require a separate Managed Services Agreement.
